His and Hers
Feb. 23rd, 2005 05:49 pmI just finished watching the last episode of "His and Her Circumstances" -- I'm *soooo* confused! See, not only was half of the episode in this weird sort of "haiku vision," showing stills of various characters having conversations or staring at each other and with these two narrators describing the scene in the vaguest terms possible (they were literally saying things like, "An encounter...conversation...more conversation...parting...farewells..."), but during all those parts there were all sorts of things written in Japanese all over the screen with *no English translation!!* Even with both the English voices and the English subtitles on, I swear I must have been missing stuff, because the stuff in Japanese had question marks and exclamation points and such, and the narrators were speaking in complete monotone. Besides, I got the feeling some weird stuff was going on -- Arima said something that sounded way out of character (and slightly creepy) to me, and I was hoping to figure out what he meant by it, but he didn't show up again in the episode. Grrr!
Oh well -- the rest of the show was good (aside from the constant recapping of the entire story in every friggin' episode -- that got annoying), and I guess I've learned not to expect too much from anime endings (that's what fanfiction is for...*grin*).
I saw a couple of shows in NY last weekend (I was talking to a couple of friends about them at school, so that's what brought them to mind) -- one was Fiddler on the Roof, which was great fun to watch, because I was in our school's production of it last year, so it was full of nostalgia for me. Not to mention the fact that (I'm proud to say) our Tevye was a much better singer than the guy who did it on Broadway (Harvey Fierstien, I think his name was -- he was the one who played the gay brother who did the makeup job on Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire). Granted, I think they were going more for character than voice in this production, but I must admit I missed hearing Mario do "If I Were a Rich Man," and "L'Chaim," and all the rest. Mario's an opera singer (seriously -- he sings with a professional company, despite the fact that he's still in high school), so he has a fantastic voice.
Anyway, the other show I saw was called Avenue Q -- it was basically a cross between Rent and Sesame Street (you heard me...). Half the characters were human, while the other half were muppets (operated by humans who carried them around on stage and did the voices). All the songs were done in the Sesame Street style, though they had titles like "The Internet is for Porn," and "We're all a Little Bit Racist." There was even a pair of roommates who were obviously meant to parody Bert and Ernie -- I'll give you one guess what controversial issue they were most involved in. (*grin*) It was hilarious!
I leave for San Antonio with my choir tomorrow, and I haven't even started packing. Oy vey...(is that how you spell it? I don't actually speak Yiddish, so I have no idea...)

Date: 2005-02-23 06:30 pm (UTC)FIDDLER ON THE ROOF! <3 <3 <3 My favorite play ever! And L'Chaim is an awesome song. 'Tis my favorite (aside from Sunrise, Sunset). I got the soundtrack last summer and I literally listened to it for a month straight. ^_^ hee.
Have you ever read My Name is Asher Lev? (This isn't random, I promise! Hee, my mind connected the Judaism... yeah...) I read it for school this year and I loved it. Normally I'm not a fan of required school reading, but this book Was.Awesome. I definitely reccomend it to you, since you're big into reading/writing. =)

Date: 2005-02-23 09:03 pm (UTC)I've never read My Name is Asher Lev, but I'll snoop around for it next time I go to the bookstore. I can never have too many books...(*grin*) Do you know the author's name (unless, of course, it's an actual autobiography, in which case I can probably guess)?
I know what you mean about school reading. I think the only book I ever really enjoyed that was assigned reading (and not chosen by me) was The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. Now there's a good series -- haven't read them for a while though, so who knows if they're as good as I remember.
