I was getting restless for some new material to watch the other day, and it finally occurred to me to try raiding the DVDs at the library for anime that I haven't seen, rather than shelling out money I don't have to buy boxed sets that I may or may not end up liking. I new they had at least some anime at the library, since I checked out some Ranma DVDs a couple of years ago, but it hadn't occured to me until now to actually look for stuff I'd never seen before (brilliant, eh? *grin*). Anyway, as a result, I've been branching out a bit over the past week or so. I've seen about eight episodes (I think) of Neon Genesis Evangelion (which I have a bad habit of pronouncing "ee-VAN-juh-lon," even though I know it's wrong -- grrr) so far, and I think I like it -- although I will probably just keep checking them out from the library rather than actually buying them. The characters are interesting, but something about the whole giant-robot-centric plotline strikes me as being slightly...odd. I dunno, I guess mecha (that's what the shows with giant robots are called, right? I'm completely clueless...) just isn't my style. I can't help being reminded of Power Rangers...

I've also seen the first four episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho, which I think I could easily grow to love. It's one that I've thought about trying several times, but something about it always stopped me -- can't remember what. It reminds me somewhat of Ranma 1/2 (mainly in that Yusuke and Ranma look and act very much the same, and Kuwabara reminds me of Kuno -- except Kuno is much better looking and even more of an idiot) though without the slapsticky plotlessness of that series. I really want to get to some point in the series that involves Kurama, because apparently everyone is obsessed with him, so I'm curious to know what the big deal is. To tell the truth, when I saw him in the credits I thought he was a girl (I looked the show up online and it mentioned Kurama's red hair, and I went, "*That's* Kurama? That's a *guy*??"). Anyway, I'm waffling on whether to sacrifice some of my waning funds on the first boxed set of that series -- for now I'll probably just keep checking them out from the library, since I'm pretty short on expendable money and I don't get more for a couple of months.

Finally, I've seen the first six episodes of His and Her Circumstances, which I am knock down, drag out in love with! You have no idea what a relief it is to see a show where the two main characters are in love with each other and they actually *say/do* something about it! That's something that's always bugged me about every other anime show I've ever seen -- everyone's always too busy pretending to hate, or at least "not love," everybody else that *nothing ever happens.* Honestly, I don't even care how this show ends -- I'm just happy that something is actually happening. I've seen way too many shows full of "almosts" that never actually make any progress. Besides all that, Arima is positively adorable (*sickening fangirl swoon*). He could give Inu-chan a run for his money -- especially considering Inu's foul temper (but those ears still take the cake -- *grin*).

Oh yeah, and a friend of mine lent me an anime movie called Appleseed (I think), which was...weird. I suppose it didn't help that I was watching it late on a school night, so I was nearly falling asleep at the time, but it had this robot guy with bunny ears as one of the main characters. I think there was probably a larger plot going on (something about a computer controlling an entire city and this guy whose wife had committed suicide) that I had trouble following since I kept dozing off, but I couldn't seem to get past that bunny-eared robot...

Moving away from "anime me" and back to "other me," I'm reading a book right now that I absolutely love: It's called "Mike, Mike and Me," and it's about this woman who was dating two different guys named Mike during the summer of 1989. The thing is that she married and had kids with one of them -- but you (the reader) don't know which one. The book jumps back and forth between the past and the present -- the past chapters being about the summer of '89, the present ones being about her reconnecting through email with the Mike she didn't choose, and facing a similar dilemma as before. It's really interesting (not to mention a really, really fun read). I'm pretty sure I've figured out which Mike she chose, but lately there have been lines here and there that seem to suggest otherwise. I can't decide whether things are as they seem, or whether I'm just *intended* to see them that way...

Oooooh god...I haven't done any writing in weeks...crap... It's one of those things that I really, really enjoy when I can get myself into it, but it's just so hard to get started at any given time. I sit down and think, "I have to write -- but reading is so much easier..."

(*sigh*)

OMG you're watching Evangelion?!?

Watch all of it. I can loan it to ya if you want, but I only have the dub and I would suggest the sub if you can get your hands on it, which wouldn't be hard. I wouldn't even consider Eva a mecha anime. While it involves mecha, it lacks many of the qualities found in most mecha anime, and the plot is far more character driven than technology driven. I don't know if it is the type of thing you'll like or not, but it is an incredible work of art. While I will try to refrain from fanboy wanking too much, Eva is IMO the best anime out there. When I say best, I mean I think that it is the most artistic, moving, and well made. It won't leave you with happiness and satisfaction, but it will stick in your head forever. Unless you are one of those people who thinks Eva is all bogus.

If you want some other good anime, I can lend you a lot of stuff. Just lemme know what type of show you are interested in.

Yeah, it's weird -- I'm beginning to realize that whenever I'm not actually watching it (Eva, that is), all I can think of are the giant robots (which sorta turn me off of watching it), but when I am watching it, it sort of draws me in. I think it's growing on me, now that Shinji has loosened up a bit and has more people to talk to (I'm up to episode 11) -- and I do plan to watch it to the end, if only because my nagging curiosity begs me to do so (*grin*). I've been watching the dubs myself, because I'm too lazy to read subtitles, so it would be awesome if I could borrow yours and not have to wait for the disks to come back in to the library one at a time (in the right order, no less). And I'd love to borrow more of your anime if I can -- though it's hard for me to say what kind I like since I don't quite know how to categorize it. I guess anything with good character development and relationships (as opposed to extreme action and whatnot) as the focus would be good. I don't mind blood and guts too much as long as there's enough plot to make it worth my while. Humor is a plus, but not a necessity -- same with romance. I dunno...got any suggestions?
