I just finished watching the Mel Brooks/Anne Bancroft version of To Be Or Not To Be -- and I have to say, I've seen (and loved) most of his movies, but I think this one just became my favorite. At the very least, it's up there in the top three (Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights are pretty damn good... *grin*). The great thing about it is that it's really funny, and it definitely has moments of distinct "Brooksishness," but it's also a really good movie in it's own right -- it's not straight up spoof, like most of his stuff. I love the spoof, but it does tend to be a bit depthless. This movie was light and funny, but it had a real story too, and characters you care about and root for. At one point near the end, I was actually reduced to tears -- not that it's hard to make me cry, but I'm pretty sure I've never cried at a Mel Brooks movie before (well, I dunno -- that scene from Spaceballs where President Scroob gets beamed in with his ass on backwards has made me choke up once or twice... *grin*). Anyway, yeah. If you're a Mel Brooks fan -- or even if you aren't -- this movie is definitely worth seeing.
