Okay, I'm not really a DeviantArt person. I have an account there, I've put up like four pictures -- I visit it once in a blue moon. So I'm not really up to date on the politics over there, and I don't have much of a personal stake in them anyway. But I couldn't help picking up through the grapevine that apparently they have a rule against posting pictures of an explicit nature depicting characters who are "minors" (presumably meaning minors by U.S. standards, so under 18. This came up in the context of a controversy over whether or not ch 558 qualifies Inu and Kag as being "of age").

Not to start a big debate (I'm sure this has been more than covered by now), but where is the logic in that? Rules about depictions of minors are set up to protect the minors. As in, the actual people that the pictures depict. The idea is to preserve the dignity, privacy, and safety of children who may not be in control of or capable of approprately judging the kinds of pictures that exist of them. Fictional characters don't require that kind of protection...because they're fictional.

Am I missing something here?

I think the only thing you're missing is the same thing that the rest of us are missing -- that Earth logic does not compute on that site. And it's not so much that the rule makes very little sense. It's that it's only enforced sporadically and only, it seems, in the fanart section. Go to the fetish photography section and you will be amazed at the amount of porn there...and it's not being taken down.

That comment about Chapter 558 being just a "tacked on epilogue" just boggles my mind. WTF, dA, W.T.F.

(*sigh*) Yes, I was afraid of that...

I can see the argument that 558 primarily functions as an epilogue myself, although I think the resolution it provides is a little more essential to the story than that of most epilogues. What I don't get is why that makes a difference. I mean, Kagome was fifteen in what, 1996 or something? So if you look at it in real-world terms, she's really 27 or so by now. Is it her fault that Takahashi wasn't able to write the story at the speed of real time? And hell, as far as we know, she lived out her life in the feudal era -- she's dead by now! (*grin*)

I know they're doing this to cover their asses, but I have to wonder who from. Who in their right mind would focus an anti-underaged-porn crusade on works based on fictional animated characters? Especially with that stash of fetish photography right next door...
