Alright, I'm giving up on trying to keep the Ranma manga, anime, and fanfics separate in my head. It's a lost cause. I'm reading through a bunch of the earlier chapters in order right now, some of which I've read before, but some of which I haven't (although most of those I haven't read occur in some form or another in the anime, which I have seen). Anyway, I have certain distinct memories of having read manga versions of anime arcs, or read/seen both versions and still had details leftover in my mind unexplained (leaving me to assume that those details must have been planted there by fic authors), and so forth -- but as I come upon these arcs and things in the manga, they keep turning out differently than I remembered. Like the Martial Arts Food Delivery thing -- I knew there was no new fiance in the manga version, and I also knew that there was the whole thing about Kuno's house being the finish line, but I absolutely could have sworn that the arc still ended with Akane limping across the finish line while Ranma latches onto Shampoo's legs to slow her down. One thing that has always bugged me about the episode is the fact that Ranma is so reluctant to turn into a girl and finish the race for Akane once it becomes apparent that she needs help -- which really makes very little sense considering that by that point in the series he's competed in a gymnastics tournament (complete with a leotard) and battled Mousse in a Playboy Bunny costume. In other words, he may not be entirely thrilled with his girl form's existence, but he certainly hasn't shown any qualms about using it to his advantage when the situation calls for it. Anyway, getting back to the point, I could have sworn that I had read a manga version of this in which things played out slightly differently, but came to the same result, confirming my convictions about Ranma's reluctance being out of character.

The second thing was that I had distinct visual memories of a scene in which Happosai trapped Ranma in a block of cement during the Romeo and Juliet thing. This does not (I believe) happen in the anime version, and I would have sworn that I had read the manga version and confirmed that it did not happen there either -- but I just read it again, and sure enough, there was a moment where Ranma showed up in a giant block of cement. The thing here though is that I think I must have originally heard about it in a fanfic somewhere, because I think I've had the image in my mind since before I ever picked up a manga -- and the actual image in my mind is in color. No idea where it might have come from though. There were tons of random Ranma 1/2 stories I read when I first discovered fanfiction (before I even found ff.net) that I haven't kept track of. Too bad really -- I've got a million and one little snippets of memory scattered in my brain that I'd really like to be able to place.

Anyway, yeah. I'm going nuts. But what else is new?

I got some reciept-sorting done today -- man is this gonna be a big job. So far I've just been sorting them into which account they belong to and marking them with the date with a big blue Sharpie. Once I finish that, I'll have to go back through them and sort them chronologically, and then I can finally start matching them against my records and seeing what goes where. Oddly enough, though, I kind of enjoy it. It's simple, and it makes me feel productive. Staring at my computer screen for three hours trying to muscle my way through a bout of writer's block (which is the other thing I did today) does not make me feel productive...

Oh -- and I worked on music. A little bit. Damn, but "Ave Maria" is a hard song to learn. Not so much the melody, but matching up the correct syllables with the correct notes. It's not written in the most intuitive fashion if you ask me. My next coaching is on Wednesday, though, so I have until then to figure it out. And one more worry off my list: My voice lesson/recital situation for next year has finally been firmed up a bit. I've got the teacher I wanted (my previous teacher was fired a couple of months ago. No news yet as to exactly why...), and they're letting me push my recital back to the spring (which gives me more time to plan, and gives my supporting artists more time to get their own recitals out of the way first... *grin*). Still have to set the dates, but even that should be easier now that it's in the spring -- fewer other recitals and performances to compete with.
