frameofmind6: (good to be the Doctor)

Alright, it's true -- the series definitely picked up in the second half. I'm really getting to like it now. Still not even the slightest chance of it replacing any of Ten's tenure as my favorite section of the story (and I would neither want nor expect it to), but I'm growing to enjoy it in its own right. Which is good!

My reactions in summary:

Not crazy about the new Daleks. The multicolors don't work for me. In my opinion, the Daleks really can't afford to look any more cartoonish and pinball-machine-like than they already do -- it's a stretch to be afraid of the black and/or bronze ones, but the primary colors...eeeehhhh...

New-new-new Doctor is alright. I'm not in love with him, but I like him as a friend. That'll do. (I also like his propensity for picking out bizarre items of clothing and insisting, despite evidence to the contrary, that they're cool. That is pretty funny...)

River is interesting, and doesn't bother me now that she's not messing with my Doctor.

Amy's pretty cool. (And I just realized this afternoon that she looks uncannily like my sister. My sis has dark brown hair instead of red, but other than that it's positively spooky...)

Rory is adorable. 'Nuff said.

Now I just have to hope my Dad decides to upgrade the cable before Christmas Day so I can watch the big marathon on BBC America. Well, have it on in the background, at least. Got a lot of other stuff going on that day too, of course...lol...

:P Glad to know that I wasn't the only one that had that exact same experience. (How did you like the Vincent episode? That one is probably my favorite, just for the sake of the characterization.)

Prizma-color Daleks are on the short list of things that I could really live without for a season. I think it's because I grew up watching TNG - the Borg were effing terrifying to a five year old. In comparison, the Daleks are pretty tame looking, lol.

I know!! The absolute first thing I thought of when I first saw the Cybermen was, "Oh, so they're like the cheezy version of the Borg then..." ;)

Doctor Who villains are fun and all, but if you really want the pants scared off you ya gotta go for Star Trek. Though those Weeping Angel things are pretty damn scary, I'll admit. But I found them scarier in "Blink" than in the two parter from season 5. Just thought they stretched the concept too far on that one -- it lost the horror movie quality.

I loved the Vincent episode. That one definitely made me cry a couple of times, and it was really sweet. (Plus, Bill Nighy cameo FTW... ;) I think that and "Amy's Choice" were my favorite ones of the season. Oh, and "The Lodger" -- that one was funny, and a bit sweet too. (And the fraction of a second in which Ten appeared on the screen was an unexpected treat...lol ;)

(Also, re. your icon -- *huggles Rory* What a sweetheart...)

I think that "Blink" was also terrifying because there were only a couple, oblivious people in every scene. In the 2 parter, they had guns and lots of soldiers, etc etc - great for picking off, but less of a thrill when it did happen.

Rory for the win, totally. :D

So Dr Who is a British show? That's why I have no clue what everyone's talking about. Lol. I've seen it mentioned all over LJ but had no clue what channel it was on. Oops. Makes sense.

Lol -- yeah, it's a British show. It's sort of their cultural equivalent of Star Trek. It's been around since the sixties, updating and reinventing itself over the years -- though in Doctor Who they keep it going by having the Doctor "regenerate" every time the current actor hands off to a new one, rather than starting whole separate spin-off series with brand new characters like they do in Star Trek. I've mostly only seen the more recent series (they picked it up again in 2005 after about a fifteen year gap), but the old ones are interesting too, if a bit slow by comparison. Anyway, it's probably mostly the new series you've been hearing people talk about... ;)

Makes sense, not sure if I'd watch it (because I don't have BBC America and I'm lazy on Hulu unless I absolutely love a show) but it's fun to hear all the comments from folks. Thanks for the explanation! =)

It's not on Hulu, actually, so that would be a bit of a dead end anyway. ;) Netflix would probably be your best bet if you ever did feel like giving it a try -- they have almost all the recent seasons available for streaming. But I know what you mean about being lazy -- took me years to get around to it myself...

Sure thing! ;)
