Yeah, so, anybody remember that post I left back at the end of February (was it that long ago? Geeze...time flies...) about my crush on "bad boy" (which, btw, I got over -- and even if I hadn't, it would certainly be over now)? Yeah, well, I was talking to his ex-girlfriend recently and finally found out a bit more about the breakup. Turns out he cheated on her -- with a guy...

Never saw that coming -- but it sure does explain a few things, let me tell you...

Anyway, just got back from a road trip to Appleton WI to see "The Last 5 Years"...

Man that was a fun trip. We saw the show, and then we ended up strolling around downtown Appleton for awhile afterward. We even went to a club called Route 66, but we were only there for about ten minutes or so, because it wasn't really some people's thing, and some of us weren't really dressed for it anyway. Trying to dance in a crowd of people in a small hot space in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with a purse and a suede jacket isn't easy. Still, not bad for my first clubbing experience (unless you count the Keene concert at the Quest, but that's a different kind of experience. Better music at that one, definitely...). I want to go clubbing here sometime though, and actually plan for it ahead of time.

The play itself was good too, even though it was a student production. We all disagreed as to the positives and negatives of it, but personally I thought the girl was better than the guy. Her "Still Hurting" wasn't quite as good and emotionally connected as it could have been, and I heard her voice slip once or twice (understandable), but overall she gave a very good, engaging performance. "A Summer in Ohio" was especially well done.

He, on the other hand, did not impress me. I mean, he had a very nice voice, and he was certainly able to sing the part, but sometimes it felt as though he wasn't sinking into the style of the music enough -- he was too classical, technically. But the main thing that bugged me about him was his lack of physicality. Most of what he did seemed to consist of facial expression, which is alright in some places, but songs like "Shiksa Goddess" and "Moving Too Fast" need a lot more than that. I mean, he was singing about being swept away, racing along to all he's ever wanted, and he just stood there! I was thinking "Move your arms, dude! Run back and forth across the stage! Get excited for god's sake!" Granted, that can make singing more difficult, but that's the challenge! Same thing in "If I Didn't Believe in You" -- he just wasn't frustrated enough. He needed to tear at his hair and make gestures and such so that we could actually see the difference when it came down to the more intimate, genuine parts of the song. I dunno, I just felt like he was sort of giving a concert rather than playing a role.

Then again, I suppose I'm one to talk -- one of my biggest problems onstage is often figuring out how to move and make big gestures. Maybe that was why it bugged me so much...

Whoa... sorry that "bad boy" thing didn't work out...

LoL yeah, even band people know that movement is everything. And if we can move when playing instruments, that guy could certainly move a little while acting...

^_^ glad you enjoyed yourself.

Oh my goodness, talk about coming out of left field, eh? That happened to a good friend of mine, and she was totally devestated because she took his overt friendliness to mean that he was interested in her. And the worst part is that she was the first one he came out to. >_<

And I hate going clubbing on the fly. I always feel so overdressed (as in wearing too much clothing) and out of place. :P

Glad you had fun!
