Just got an email saying that all NYU undergrad classes are canceled for the afternoon, just because of this little bit of snow we're getting. (I'm not actually a student anymore, but I'm still on a couple of mailing lists, so I get these things from time to time.) Feh -- East Coasters are such wimps. If they cancelled classes in Minnesota every time there was an inch or two of snow on the ground, there'd be no classes from October through March... (*grin*)

Get half an inch of snow down in New Orleans or Houston and everything locks down. LOL.

I remember in Ogden where one non-blizzardy snowstorm we got 30 inches that fell over 2 days. And during this snowfall, I don't think school or work was shut down (maybe school, but I know hubby had to go to work.) It wouldn't have been a problem except our driveway had quite a bit of slope and we had a wall that went right down to the street. House was built on a hill. We had to shovel show to push it against the wall, but leave enough space that the mailman could get in. And of course, in the middle of doing this, the snow plow came by and made a berm we had to clear off again. That was quite a bit of work.

I'll never live in a place that makes it that hard to shovel snow again...

I used to get so jealous of people living in less snowy places when I was in grade school. We had plenty of snow, but an actual "snow day" was virtually unheard of. I think they canceled school for weather maybe twice in my entire childhood...

We had a tricky driveway too, mainly because it was so steep -- if you didn't get the snow off soon enough, it would melt a bit in the sun and then re-freeze into solid ice. Once that happened, getting the cars into the garage was like playing life-size pinball. I think my parents have a guy who comes and plows the driveway with his truck now -- only trouble is they have a fourth car that they have to park outside (the garage only takes three), so between the driveway plow and the street plow it gets completely boxed in. Of course, that's the car I use when I go home to visit, so I'm the one who always has to dig it out... (*grin*)

What? Put cars in a garage? Surely you jest. LOL.

Yeah, it could be really hard getting up our driveway for the same reasons...which is why we have 4 wheel drive vehicles. Of course, now we have a pretty flat driveway, and no retaining wall and it faces south, to boot, and here where we live we get a lot less snow in town (plenty in the mountains, just not in town)...much easier.

Lol -- despite having lived in Minnesota since before I was born, only one of the nine different cars my parents have owned at various points in my life has had four-wheel drive. Don't ask me why (*grin*). And they only bought that one because they needed it to pull a boat...

I think they're planning to do some trading in soon though -- my mom had a 4WD loaner for a couple of days this winter when one of the cars was in the shop, and she took a liking to it. Plus I think they'd like to have a boat-pulling car that's at least a little more energy efficient than a Ford Explorer.

When I lived in northern New York (near Watertown), we still went to class when there was 4 feet of snow on the ground and a -30 windchill. One of the most miserable weeks of my life and a large factor in my decision to transfer back to the south, where snow freaks everyone out. LoL.

In the northeast, at least people were practiced at dealing with snowstorms. In Texas, if they're going to drive, they drive like normal (i.e. too effing fast and with a death wish even on dry, warm days) or like they've forgotten what an accelerator is at all. I don't even go out if it's icy - I want to live, after all. :P
